Photography Division

The ability to reproduce photographs in newspapers began in 1888 with the invention of the half tone or photo engraving process, but it was not until 1904 that British newspapers carried photographs, the Daily Mirror being the first. The Chartered Institute of Journalists has been representing photographers since that time.

Now photographers make up a sizeable proportion of the membership and the Photography Division represents both photographers and picture desk staff. Our members range from freelance to staff and contract photographers on national, regional and local papers.

As part of the services to its members, the Photography Division has negotiated highly advantageous members' rates with insurance companies such as Aaduki Multimedia Insurance. It is represented on the Police Press Liaison Committee with the Metropolitan Police and London Based Photographers.
