Thank you for coming to this page - WE NEED YOUR HELP!
If you have come to this page it is likely to be because you have been invited to join the campaign against ITV's plans to reduce their media outlets from 27 to nine.
ITV bosses claim that cutting the media outlets would save the broadcaster up to £40m a year, which is around a third of its £120m regional programming budget.
The Institute is deeply concerned about the changes which will affect the quality and relevance of local news in your area.
At our AGM on Saturday, September 29, members voted to resist the changes. Since then we have contacted to MPs voicing our objections (the links below will show what we have done). But there is no voice stronger at the local level than YOURS.
Please write to your MP, and to the media in your area. Urge them to do all they can to resist the watering-down of local news bulletins.
We suggest personalising this with local issues which are happening in your area to demonstrate the sort of story that might be lost if these changes go ahead. This way, people will see that you’re working in the wider interests of your community rather than moaning about your own predicament.
We have a website which we will keep updated. Keep an eye on this and, hopefully, you will see some comments from MPs and others who have responded to our campaign. If you can get any celebrities you know to join – hallelujah!
PLEASE let us know what you are doing because we can add your initiative to our newsletter and website.
Finally, thank you for getting involved because together we can make a difference to this issue that really matters.
OTHER THINGS YOU CAN DO:
If you have the time it may be useful to contact other local public relations and press officers who will share your disquiet about a narrowing down of news outlets.
USEFUL LINKS:
We have put a draft letter HERE for you to download and send to your MP. It would be helpful if you could personalise the letter and include details of an example of a local story in your area.
